for the Art of Living
A design project for Om Anugrah Yatra held in Uttar Pradesh in year 2018 by the Art of Living. A journey for more than 1500 pilgrim through the sacred and spiritual places and cities of Uttar Pradesh
Collaboration
Founded in 1981 by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar, The Art of Living is an educational and humanitarian movement engaged in stress management and service initiatives. The organization operates globally in 155 countries and has touched the lives of over 370 million people.
Overview
Requirement and design brief
A design requirement of a carry bag for pilgrims was made by the organization. A product which can hold all essentials during the travel, which can ease their travel.
A unique brief of design requirement was given stating towards a design which is not gender or age biased. A bag which can be used hassle-free by person of any gender, which is also convenient in use by elderly, adult or child.
Ideation
Loose thumbnail sketches for initial ideation
Based on given design brief and requirement, various assumptions and features which will be required in the product were made. Based on these assumptions, I started sketching many concepts and out of those concept only 8th were interesting.
Out of which two were most accurate for given brief and these two were only developed further.
Digital exploration of final selected model, maximum detailing and texture with functions been drawn to look alike what expected in real.
Concept refinement & detailing
Moving selected ideation towards more detailed and functional concepts. Refining form and inducing features at the same time. Out of two refined concepts, one with messenger style got finalized.
A design with front pocket inspired from denim trousers as they are most convenient and easy to access.
Appearance & specs
Final appearance and color options
An appearance which enhances and is compatible with the feel of his holy journey. A design which is close to nature and reality along with soothing aesthetics.
For this purpose appearance was inspired from a palm tree, taking its essence and mimicking the feel of it in this design with material, color and detailing.
No other material than combination of jute & cotton was best suited for that.
Outcome
Manufacturing and consumption
Range of jute fabric from 12/14 to 26/12 was used during prototyping in order to find out which is the best suited for this purpose were bag has to have some amount of stiffness in it even when its empty coupled with water seal backing coupled with nylon or canvas shoulder strap along with metallic accessories with brass finish.
